Michael Harrison and Mary Morrison. (N.B. Many of the names that appear in this registry seem to be more typical of residents of Ulster. There were a number of "incidents" that would have caused resettlement by northern Catholics into this region. There is a list extant of people brought in by Landlords Cuffe, Browne and Lord Altamante. The names that appear in these records that might be associated with the mass emigration from Ulster follow MULDOON, BRADY, HUGHES, SWEENEY, LYNSK, CUFFE, DEVANEY, LOUGHRAN, MACKIN, MCCANN, BIRRANE, HARTE, MCKENNA, MCGRATH, DOHERTY, MCGUIRE, KENNY, MCLOUGHLIN, CUNNINGHAM,ROONEY, DEVINS, GERAGHTY, MULLIN OR MULLINS, AND MULDOON. It is said by some that the transportation of these and other families had less to do with altruism on the part of the landlords but from a belief that by introducing the northern work ethic would promote more diligence among the natives. One unintended consequence is the blend of the Ulster and Connaught accents which is a unique and musical form of spoken English.
The Hill Street address appears in many of the baptisms. Although the street is paved today and not nearly as long, some of the houses shown here are original dwellings of the people whose names appear in the church registries. |
