 Ballina Cathedral sits on Church Street just across from the River Moy that divides the town Construction on the church began in 1829 but was not completed until 1893. In the interim, there were political movements which included Daniel O'Connell's Repeal movement, a resurrected "Young Ireland" movement which was a somewhat disorganized call to aarms to remove the British. and, of course, the Great Famine. Archbishop MacHale's dream was finally realized in spite of all.  Crossmolina Church is about seventeen miles from Ballina. The church is beautiful inside, very ornate and reminiscent of pre-Vatican II with a magnificent marble baptismal fount. It stands on the site of a much older church and is only about 130 years old. It is said that there were small chapels in the distant townlands which were ministered to by the PP's on an irregular basis. The official church records of many large parishes often do not include the names of some parishioners who lived on the fringes of the parish.
