The first book of Kilmoremoy Catholic Church records ends in 1836. There are a few baptisms listed for 1841 and then a gap of almost ten years. The Reverend Edward Gallagher signed the book in 1850 but one can only imagine the crises of the intervening years. The families who appear in the records beginning in the 1850's are almost an entirely different population. The Great Famine not only caused massive emigration to the US and the UK, but it also caused internal migration in which some families located to other ares of Ireland and some, sadly were lost to memory. Some families from Galway and Mayo attempted to escape the Famine by leaving the mainland and traveling to the Aran Islands which were not so heavily reliant on the potato crop. Unfortunately, they were so many in number that the Aran natives could not sustain both populations. In addition, many of the travelers were already sick, suffering from typhus, cholera and tuberculosis. The combination of sickness and the strain on the limited resources of the islands placed a heavy toll on the islands as both the natives and those fleeing the Famine lost their battle to survive.
